Wordless Wednesday: Aunt Jessie’s House

In honor of the newspaper article I posted on Halloween about the “Mock Wedding Features Scotch Hallowe’en Party,” I’m posting a photo of Aunt Jessie and Uncle Lou’s house in Harrisburg where the party most likely was held for this month’s Wordless Wednesday.

Aunt Jessie Orr's House

Home of Lou G. and Jessie Orr in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

According to the article, Jessie and Lou lived at 2017 Foster [Forster?] Street in 1915. The 1910 census and 1920 census both show them living in the attached 2019 Forster Street with their daughters Alice, Agnes, and Jessie L.

Given the approximate ages of the children in the photo, if it’s of the Orrs, it should be from this period. I can’t say the house there looks anything like this, though.

Jessie’s parents, Robert and Allison (Whitelaw) Trotter, were from Scotland. Jessie was born in 1870, making her a contemporary of Eliza Craig (Bonnington) Smith, who like Jessie’s mother married and started a family in Scotland, then immigrated to the United States where she settled and raised her children.

I’d always perceived Jessie as great grandma Isabella (Smith) Hocker’s friend from the way Aunt Jean spoke about her. But I guess I was off by a generation.

Wordless Wednesday: Robert Askey Children?

Askey children?

Possibly children of Robert Alexander Askey and Wilhelmina Force?

This photo was among the photos from the Hoover family photos from Pine Glen, Burnside Township, Centre County, Pennsylvania. When I asked my grandmother, she said she thought it was of the Askey kids. Presumably she was talking about her great aunt and uncle, Robert Alexander and Wilhelmina (Force) Askey, who lived just down the road from her grandparents, Samuel Thomas and Victoria (Walker) Hoover.

Robert Alexander Askey (1853-1950) and Wilhelmina Force (1857-1921) had 12 children, 10 of whom were living in 1910. I have the names of only 10:

  1. Dora Askey
  2. Jefferson B. Askey
  3. Jean Askey
  4. Bessie M. Askey
  5. James Rudolph Askey
  6. Iva M. Askey
  7. Florence Ruth Askey
  8. Elizabeth Sarah Askey
  9. Rhoda E. Askey
  10. Robert Sherman Askey

If you know—or can guess—at the identities of those in the photo, please leave a comment or drop me a line. Thanks!

In honor of my great-grandparents wedding anniversary next Tuesday, April 19th…

Edwin J. Wieder, son of Emanuel J. and Alavesta (Dillinger) Wieder, married Mary Catharine “Mae” Waage, daughter of Dr. Charles Theodore and Lydia S. (Eshbach) Waage, on 19 Apr 1905 at Dr. Waage’s home in Pennsburg, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The couple had 55 years together before Edwin’s death on 22 Jan 1960 at age 79. Mae lived another ten years, dieing on 28 Nov 1970 at age 93.

The photo shows them on the 50th wedding anniversary on 19 Apr 1955. Their anniversary was written up in the Town and Country on 20 Apr 1955.
