Christopher Hocker/Hacker

I am looking for information on Christopher HOCKER (original spelling: Hacker). He was born ca. 1776 at Erdenheim, Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, to Johann George HOCKER and Margaretta WEIDMAN. Christopher married Catherine DAUB 10 Apr 1799 in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

However, sometime around 1808, finding himself deep in debt, Christopher apparently fled Pennsylvania and his wife. He wound up in Ohio, where he married again and raised a family. I do not know who he married or where they lived. They had at least one child – George Washington HOCKER, born 16 Aug 1814, Ohio – who returned to Pennsylvania and married Elizabeth SCHEETZ, born Nov 1820, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Hi Kris, i’ve just begun researching my Hocker line (just discovered it after 30 years of researching other lines!) so my findings are in the early stages. I’ve been on ancestry & there are a couple of trees with information on them. Since they don’t have sources I’m wondering about the accuracy of what they site (I find most trees on ancestry suspect). The info I found on Christopher Hocker is that he married Katherine Daub and they had a daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) Hocker (1813-1905), born in PA. Do you have that information as well? (According to the trees I found, Christopher Hocker’s parents were the ones you mention: Johan Georg & Margaret Weidman).

    1. Very interesting, Carol. Can you send me a link to that tree? I would be interested in looking at that information.

Christopher Hocker (ca 1772-aft 1823), son of Johann George and Anna Margaretha (Weidman) Hacker, married Catharina Daub (1771-1841), daughter of Henry and Christiana (Wohlfarth) Daub, at St. Michael and Zion Church, Philadelphia. As far as I know, they did have a daughter Elizabeth, but she was born 25 Dec 1790/5 and died 30 Oct 1866. Christopher is one of the family mysteries. According to family stories, he found himself in debt about 1813 and fled to Ohio—without his wife—where he married again and had a son George Washington Hocker (1814-1877), who returned to Pennsylvania and married Elizabeth Scheetz in 1841.

I haven’t been able to verify this information. I have tax information (intermittently) and deed records for him through 1813. He’s mentioned in his father’s estate records as being alive in Apr 1823. But that’s it. His nephew was named as trustee for Catharina (Daub) Hocker during the settling of her father’s estate in Aug 1836. Those records refer to her as the wife of Christopher Hocker. So, I’m still looking for him.

I do not have an Elizabeth Hocker (1813-1905) in my database at all. I’d be interested in researching her to learn more.

      ~Kris
