“Judge Hocker Dies at Ocala
Distinguished Jurist Spent Last Winter Here and Made Many Friends

The many St. Petersburg friends of Judge William Hocker will regret to learn that he died last Wednesday. Judge Hocker spent last winter at Sunnyside, with the family of Joseph E. Hamilton, 417 Fourth street north, and made many warm friends especially among the older people. He was a dignified and learned man of the old Southern school. The Ocala Star gives the following sketch of Judge Hocker’s career and family:

Judge William A. Hocker was born in Buckingham county, Virginia in 1844, and was a son of William Hocker and Susan Mildred Lewis.

He served in Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry during the civil war. In November 1868, he was married to Gertrude Venable, and settled near Leesburg, Flas., in 1874, and moved to Ocala in 1892. He became a circuit judge for the fifth circuit in 1893 and continued to hold such office until 1901 when he was elected by the supreme court as one of its commssioners, and shortly thereafter was elected a member of the supreme court of Florida, which position he occupied for 12 years and retired a few years ago on account of failing health.

In 1909 he was married the second time to Mattie N. Glover of Roanoke, Va., who survives him. He is also survived by three children, William Hocker, of Ocala; Mrs. T. P. Drake of Yalaha, and Frederick R. Hocker, of Ocala. His eldest daughter, Mrs. C. P. Lovell, died in 1914. Eight grandchildren also survive him namely: Lieut. Charles P. Lovell, Gertrude Lovell; Elizabeth, Margaret and Lucretia Hocker; William and Trusten P. Drake Jr., and Clifton Montgomery Hocker.”1

Obituary: George Walker

WALKER – At the age of 85 years, George Walker at his residence at Marsh Creek, on Friday of last week. He was the father of twenty-six children. The funeral took place on Sunday.1

In 1891, the 3rd of April was a Friday.2 So according to his obituary, George Walker died the week prior on the 27th of March and was buried on the 5th of April.

George Walker was married twice, first to Catherine Walker and second to Mary Ellen Woods. Catherine had 12 children; Mary Ellen had 14.3

Ila (RAINEY) HOCKER, was the daughter of Charles W. RAINEY and Grace BRICKALL. She was born 13 Feb 1919 and died 23 Feb 2000 in Jersey Shore, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania. She married Guy L. HOCKER, son of Clayton W.  and Clara (___) HOCKER. Guy was born 13 Jul 1909 and died 25 Jan 1999 in Jersey Shore, Lycoming county, Pennsylvania.

Guy’s ancestry goes back to Christopher and Catharina (MUELLER) HACKER. Christopher was the son of Johan Adam and Anna Elisabetha (WEIDMAN) HACKER. Catharina was the daughter of Georg and Catharina Elisabetha (___) MEULLER. The couple was originally from Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, but moved to Harrisburg, then north settling in Lycoming county by 1820.

Herbert Hershey Hocker Obituary

Here’s a transcription of the obituary of Herbert Hershey Hocker (1865—1946), son of Levi and Anna (Frantz) Hocker. Hershey married Sarah J. Bower, daughter of John and Amanda (___) Bower, 1 Apr 1906 in Yoe, Pennsylvania. 1

“H. Hershey Hocker

Funeral services for H. Hershey Hocker, 554 Race Street, who died Tuesday night after a lingering illness at his home, will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home at 1334 North Second street. The Rev. A.M. Billman, pastor of Fourth Reformed Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Oberlin Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home this evening from 7 to 9 o’clock.

A grocer in the South Harrisburg area for several years, Mr. Hocker was 79 years old and formerly lived in Oberlin.

In addition to his wife, Mrs. Sarah J. Hocker, he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Margaret Hughes, York, and several nieces and nephews.” 2
